Introduction

The LAUSD/RAND/UCLA Trauma Services Adaptation Center for Schools and Communities:

Welcome to the the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Trauma Services Adaptation (TSA) Center for Schools and Communities Web site. We are a LAUSD Crisis Counseling & Intervention Services, RAND Health, UCLA Health Services Research Center, and UCLA Child Anxiety Program partnership.

Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS):

The Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) is the only school-based early intervention program developed for ethnic minority youth, proven to be effective in addressing the mental health needs of students who have been exposed to a wide variety of traumatic events. This evidence-based program ameliorates trauma symptoms and builds coping skills and resilience. CBITS can have a positive impact on school performance including increased attendance and overall classroom functioning. An innovative aspect of this evidence-based practice is its initial development in Los Angeles Unified Schools, by school-based mental health professionals, working with multi-racial/multi-cultural and bilingual students. This has ensured CBITS' applicability and feasibility in schools and communities nationwide. CBITS has been successfully implemented in both urban and rural elementary, middle and high schools across the U.S. and internationally. Additionally, community-based agencies have successfully implemented CBITS in partnership with local schools. This culturally competent program has been shown to be effective with U.S.-born and immigrant students (i.e. Spanish, Russian, Armenian, and Korean speaking) and diverse, multicultural populations including African-American, Latino, Native American, Asian and Pacific Islander and Caucasian youth.
