The following products have been created to assist school community stakeholders in educating students,parents, teachers, school administrators, school staffs,and school mental health professionals about the effects of trauma on children. The following resources will support efforts to disseminate and create trauma informed early identification, early intervention, and prevention services to all children and adolescents in schools. LAUSD/RAND/UCLA TSA Trauma Awareness Slides: The Trauma Awareness for Schools presentation was created in collaboration with the TSA for Schools and the NCTSN School Committee. The presentation consists of 20 slides that could be used to present to school faculty, staff, and administrators about the impact of child trauma in schools. Trauma Awareness for Schools includes research on child trauma, signs and symptoms, quotes from children and parents who have received trauma focused services, and the benefits of evidenced based trauma services in schools. Students and Trauma DVD:The Students & Trauma DVD highlights some of the psychological, social, and academic problems that may impact a student exposed to community violence or a traumatic event. Students talk about their real life experience and struggles with a range of traumatic experiences including community violence, suicide of a family member, and natural disasters. A range of experts of school community stakeholders (teachers, counselors, administrators and school police) also provide their expertise and accounts relating to trauma and students. This DVD is an excellent tool for teachers, administrators and school staff to educate and promote a trauma sensitive school environment. It introduces the topic of trauma and its impact in the lives of students, providing basic facts and guidelines, and advocates for school mental health programs in schools. CBITS DVD:The CBITS DVD provides an introduction about the Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) program. The DVD features experts, counselors, teachers, and parents who have experience with the program. This DVD is 15 minutes long and provides an overview about the impact of trauma on the lives of students and introduces CBITS. This is an excellent tool to introduce school administrators, teachers, counselors, and parents an evidence based school intervention. How Schools Can Help Students Recover from Traumatic Experiences: A Tool-kit for Supporting Long-term Recovery. This RAND tool kit identifies the range of trauma-informed interventions for hurricane affected schools. The Tool-Kit expands the list of trauma informed interventions to include more general trauma response and availability of interventions specifically for schools Child Trauma Toolkit for Educators: The National Child Traumatic Stress Network has developed tools and materials to help educators understand and respond to the specific needs of traumatized children. Administrators, teachers, and staff can help reduce the impact of trauma on children by recognizing trauma responses, accommodating and responding to traumatized students within the classroom setting, and referring children to outside professionals when necessary. |
